MENS KNITS, SWEATS & ALL THE REST. by Mr Stitch

Wool Crew Necks –

Having a maritime feel, the open weave knitted crew jumper has a great handle, drape and is wonderfully warm, but crucially still light enough to make it easy to layer with jackets and coats. Steeped in history this style of jumper was knitted by wives for their fishermen husbands, often with intricate patterns and colour combinations.

Using only the best quality wools, our selection from Oliver Spencer are made in Portugal. These winter investment pieces will add colour and texture to your wardrobe, perfect for those comfortable casual days. The crewneck knit is an go to staple that requires minimal effort. Team this look with a soft baker jacket, or wear under your winter coat with denims or loose fit chinos.

Perhaps the greatest perk is the ease of wearing it straight from the wardrobe with very little maintenance (ironing required).

Sweats & Jerseys –

Some call this casual comfort, sports luxe and even lounge wear. Either way, it’s definitely all about the comfort and durability of each piece.

Dressy sweats

This season we have a fantastic selection with the introduction of Wahts, the Dutch luxury sweat wear brand. Their use of high quality jersey fabric and tonal branding, has produced a smart and luxurious sweat wear collection. This is one of our favorite brands this season as we have discovered the soft handle of the fabric and very flattering shape, looks good on almost body shapes.

Embroidered Sweats –

If you want to invest in an eye catching piece, the embroidered sweat top is a comfortable way to do it. From Paul Smith’s hiking dinosaur and organic monkey tops to Kent & Curwen iconic rose patch sweats, it’s easy to find a point of interest this season. A.P.C. have also produced a fantastic collection of graphic sweat tops featuring their iconic logo embroidered on the chest. A small varsity inspired collection can also be seen from A.P.C., having used retro style fonts and pop colours.

From the gym to the catwalk, the humble sweater has come a long way. We would style this as a smart dress down look. The dense cotton jersey used in all 3 brands, does make the tops look rich and expensive, so wearing one on its own with fresh sneakers and technical outerwear will look cool and considered.

Turtle Neck & Roll Neck Knits –

A definite winter warmer, the polo neck and turtleneck knit is one of the most striking looks when teamed up with the right jacket or coat. A good tip to remember is, the heavier the fabric the heavier the jacket. For example, if you are wearing a fine merino roll neck, then it will go under a blazer. When wearing a chunky knit go for a casual baker jacket, woven blazer or over coat .

In this image you can see we have teamed our Paul Smith roll neck knit with a stunning checked wool overcoat to create a strong dressy look, perfect for a day out in the city.

Merino Knits –

Merino is one of the finest and most durable wools one can buy. With self cleaning properties, a merino wool knit can be worn several times before having to be washed, thus prolonging the lifespan of the item. Since lockdown No.1, we have been recommending knitted merino crew neck, zip neck and button polo shirts as a new staple to the corporate at home worker. The Merino Polo has been adopted over the last few seasons by celebrity TV pundits as a clean alternative to the structured shirt. Worn under any blazer the polo shirt looks very smart and we predict it will remain a favorite going into the future.

How to wear it? If you’re concerned that the fabric is too fine and might show off a few lumps and bumps that you would prefer to keep hidden, simply try a fine tee shirt underneath. With the zip neck knits a t-shirt looks fresh and clean, but it also looks very well with a semi structured or structured shirt underneath. Our collection from Thomas Main are designed to frame their shirts, with the height of the jumpers collar being a few millimeters below the top of the shirt collar.

Graphic merinos. Very rarely do we see the graphic merino, but this season Paul Smith has produced this amazing example. On the chest you will see the stunning mountainscape made from the softest brushed merino strands making it both striking and very tactile. An ideal gift for the man that likes a little detail.

Knitted Jackets –

Circolo, Barena & Universal work

Knitwear is not exclusively restricted to jumpers. With the evolution of the Blazer becoming softer over the last few years, we now have a wonderful selection of jersey and stretch wool blend jackets and blazers. Thankfully this is what most men are looking for at present. A second layer that is relaxed, comfortable, yet smart. We predict that this is the new normal and perhaps the new formal.
