Paul Smith is one of Britain’s best known designers, known for his combination of tradition with a modern twist. Bright colours, including his distinctive multicoloured stripes, are used to add modernity and character to classic wardrobe staples. Funky colourful printed patterns and images create shirts and tees bursting with life and fun. Paul Smith is known for its bold colours and adventurous prints whilst on the other hand promoting sharp tailoring for women with double breasted suits and classic shirts. This Pre-Fall 19 collection sees print featured throughout using the cheetah print in knitwear dresses and the statement mac coat. The designers playful and youthful side comes out in the selection of t-shirts available from rabbits to dogs to logo tees, all projecting a fun and positive image. In tailoring the classic grey suit has been given an edge with a blue and yellow check print all over and alternative lining in hot pink. Wide leg and straight leg trouser are the favoured style of the season. These can be matched with the range of cool and eclectic shirts and knitwear.
After a cycling accident left a young Paul Smith with a lengthy spell in hospital, he was encouraged to enter the fashion industry through the inspiration of friends. He began to learn the art of tailoring and soon began working with a Savile Row tailor. This led to the formation of his namesake company in 1970 with the opening of “Vetement pour homme”, a tiny store in Nottingham where he sold established brands alongside his own creations. After his first fashion exhibition in Paris, 1976, the brand grew in popularity and led to the opening of the main London store in Covent garden, 1979. Since then the Paul Smith brand has launched womenswear and kidswear collections, growing to 200 shops and concessions worldwide including Japan, New York and Paris.
