How To Make The Perfect Irish Coffee at home!

"As you gaze down at the narrow street leading to the iconic Whites Tavern & Oyster Rooms, you smell the earthy aroma of burning peat, the mystical tones of traditional Irish music and a very strong urge to follow your curiosity for what can only be described as good old 'Belfast Craic'."

Our first #BRIGHTERDAYS signature drink is provided by the world famous Whites Tavern & Oyster Rooms.

Refurbished in 2019, Whites and The Oyster Rooms is located on Winecellar Entry, which was named after the many wine and spirit merchants located there.

Belfast’s first tavern license was granted in 1630 to the building where Whites now stands, making it the oldest of its kind in Belfast.

The building has a great depth and history, from housing the Tavern as we know it, to a hotel and also many wine and spirit merchants. It is said that the Bateson family established the first wine and spirit store in Winecellar Entry.

In 1868, the establishment known as The Oyster Rooms was born. Proprietor John Walker, a fish monger and spirit merchant by trade set up shop in Winecellar Entry. Fished from the loughs of Belfast and Carlingford, he became known for his supply of quality oysters to the city.

Now re-born with the history at heart, The Oyster Rooms is a place to eat, socialise and enjoy live music. Open seven days a week, call in for Guinness how it should be!

THE IRISH COFFEE

Along with Bailies Coffee and Powers Irish Whiskey, the guys at Whites Tavern & The Oyster Rooms have created an amazing step by step guide to making the perfect at home Irish coffee.

If you have never attempted making yourself an Irish Coffee at home here is our signature recipe from Michael Borland at Whites Tavern.

By Michael Borland

General Manager at Whites Tavern & Lord of all things drink related.

Ingredients:
35ml Irish Whiskey (We use Powers but the only real rule is that it be Irish)
1 teaspoon of Sugar, preferable demerara or brown if you have it.
Fresh double cream1 shot/35ml of freshly brewed coffee - espresso or filter can be used, and we prefer to use local roasters Bailies, Nota Blend.

Glassware:
A latté glass if you have it would be perfect or you can use a wine glass, just make sure you are able to hold the glass by the stem.

Method:
Whip your cream to the point that it still pours but not to the point that you can’t get it out of the bowl.

Pour boiling water into your glass to heat it up then empty it out and add the sugar, coffee and whiskey then give a stir.

You should leave about 1.5cm at the top of the glass.
Transfer the cream into something you can easily pour out of like a measuring jug.

Hold a teaspoon above your coffee and pour the cream onto it So it’s almost rolling off the spoon before hitting the coffee.

This prevents the cream from pouring too quickly which could mean it won’t sit on top of your drink.

THE RIGHT COFFEE

Bailies Nota available to buy online

An easy drinking, versatile blend.

Roasted peanut balanced with milk chocolate notes and a soft caramel sweetness makes Nota an easy-drinking espresso. It’s great on its own in a shot – quite sweet and full but without bitterness. It is fantastic with milk in a latte, cappuccino or flat white. This is a real crowd-pleaser.

Powers is the perfect choice for an Irish coffee because it has elements of vanilla and buttermilk on the palate which Compliment the caramel notes in the Nota Blend and tastes great with fresh cream.
