Oliver Spencer: relaxed British tailoring, without the formality

Oliver Spencer makes British clothes that are properly made without being stiff about it. Founded in London in 2002 by a self taught tailor, the brand's line is that quality needn't mean formality. We carry the shirts, knitwear, jackets, trousers and tailoring, online and in our Belfast store.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Oliver Spencer made in England?

Around 40% of the collection is, and the brand states that figure itself. The rest is made in European factories, principally the UK and Portugal. Fabrics and yarns come from artisanal British and Italian mills. If you want to know where a specific piece was made, ask us and we will read the label before you buy.

Does Oliver Spencer run true to size?

Yes, and the brand suggests you may want to go up anyway. Oliver Spencer pieces are cut true to size, but with jackets, shirts and t shirts a size larger gives a more relaxed feel, which is how a lot of people prefer to wear them. If you can, try two sizes. There is no wrong answer, only the shape you want.

How does Oliver Spencer trouser sizing work?

It uses two systems at once, which is the single most confusing thing about the brand. The Orsman, Morton and Fishtail are sized by waist in inches, 28 to 38. The Utility is sized XS to XL. So if you know your Fishtail size there is no published conversion to the Utility. Ring the Belfast shop and we will measure both against each other for you.

What is the difference between the Orsman, Morton, Utility and Fishtail?

Four different trouser blocks, in the brand's own words. The Orsman is a wide leg pleated trouser with a high rise and relaxed volume through the thigh. The Morton is a high rise single pleated trouser that sits on the natural waist and tapers gradually from the knee. The Utility is a straight leg relaxed trouser with an easy rise, workwear shaped but built like tailoring. The Fishtail is a tailored tapered trouser, flat front, with a V notch at the rear waistband for movement.

How do I look after Oliver Spencer knitwear?

Hand wash or use a delicate cycle in cold water with a mild detergent, then lay the piece flat on a clean towel to air dry. Never wring it and never hang it, because hanging stretches knitwear out of shape over time. Fold it and change the fold lines so you are not creasing it in the same place. For bobbling, use a fabric shaver or a fabric comb rather than scissors, and store with cedarwood or lavender for moths.

Can I get an Oliver Spencer piece altered or repaired?

Oliver Spencer runs its own alterations and repairs service, covering basic adjustments such as shortening sleeves and hems through to more complex restorations. It is an in store service at the brand's own shops, and there is no Oliver Spencer shop in Northern Ireland, so talk to us first and we will tell you what can be sorted locally and what has to travel.

Is Oliver Spencer GOTS certified?

No, and it is worth being precise about this. Oliver Spencer states that ten of its suppliers either have undergone GOTS audits or feature GOTS certification on their websites. That is a statement about suppliers, not a certification held by the brand. What Oliver Spencer does claim directly is a buy less, buy better approach, wool from reputable British or Italian mills, shearling replaced with faux pile, and down replaced with a recycled polyester microfibre.
