Midi skirts, with the hem length given in centimetres

Pleated, denim, satin and printed skirts from Rixo, Farm Rio, Stine Goya and Ottod'Ame. Midi has no agreed definition, which means the same skirt is a midi on one woman and a maxi on another, so we deal in measurements here instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is a midi skirt in centimetres?

There is no agreed answer, and that is documented rather than us dodging it. The dictionary defines midi only as extending to the mid-calf. The standard clothing terminology reference lists midi as a length and gives no measurement at all. Because midi is defined against your calf, it is height-dependent by definition. As a guide from our own rails: at five foot two, 78cm waist-to-hem lands mid-calf. At five foot six it is just below the knee. At five foot nine you need around 100cm for a true mid-calf. Ask us for the figure on a specific skirt.

Are midi skirts good for shorter women?

Yes, but the hem position matters more than the label. On a shorter frame a skirt sold as midi often lands at the widest part of the calf, which is the least flattering point on most legs. Either go shorter so it sits just below the knee, or longer so it clears the calf entirely. Both work. It is the in-between that does not. Since midi has no fixed measurement, the only way to know is the waist-to-hem figure, which we will give you for any skirt here.

How do I measure skirt length?

On the garment: lay it flat and measure from the waistband down the side seam to the hem. On yourself: stand straight and measure from your natural waist down the side of your leg to where you want the hem to fall. Match the two. That is far more reliable than mini, midi or maxi, none of which has a published measurement behind it.

Will a pleated skirt keep its pleats?

Depends on the fabric. Pleats in synthetic fabrics are heat-set and are effectively permanent. Pleats in natural fibres are pressed in and will soften with washing, so they need re-pressing. Knife pleats, pressed all in one direction, hold best but show a mark if the skirt is stored folded. Sunray pleats, radiating from the waist, move beautifully and are the most likely to drop if you wash them wrongly. Hang pleated skirts rather than folding them.

Is satin the same as silk?

No. Satin is a weave, not a fibre, so a satin skirt can be silk, viscose or polyester and the three behave completely differently. Silk satin is usually dry clean and loses strength when wet. Viscose satin has the lowest elastic recovery of any fibre and poor appearance retention when damp. Polyester satin is the most forgiving in the wash and the least breathable to wear. Check the composition on the label rather than the word satin on the description.

What size skirt should I buy if I am between two?

Size to your waist. Skirts are forgiving on the hip and unforgiving at the waist, so a skirt that fits the hip but strains at the waistband is uncomfortable and unfixable, while one that fits the waist and is a little roomy at the hip can be taken in cheaply. Convert from your waist in centimetres rather than the label, because the charts here disagree with each other by a full Italian size.

Can I hire a Rixo skirt instead?

Not from us, everything here is to buy. Rixo rental is a live thing in Ireland though, and if you need something for one occasion then hiring may honestly be the better call. What this collection is for is pieces you will wear repeatedly, which is a different purchase and where the price makes more sense.
