Paul Smith menswear: classic with a twist, since 1970

Paul Smith opened a three metre square shop in Nottingham in 1970 and built a British institution out of good tailoring and unexpected colour. Our menswear range is strongest on the accessories the brand is loved for, Signature Stripe socks, belts, wallets and scarves, alongside knitwear, shirts, trousers and tailoring.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Paul Smith run big or small?

It depends on the line, which is why you will find contradictory answers. Mainline tailoring runs slim, particularly slim fit blazers and shirts, so if you are between sizes go up. Casualwear, knitwear and footwear are much closer to true to size. The PS Paul Smith diffusion line is cut to a regular fit and is true to size, which means a mainline size and a PS size in the same number do not necessarily wear the same way.

What is the Paul Smith Signature Stripe?

It is the brand's multicoloured stripe, made up of 40 different colours. It grew out of experiments with coloured threads at the original Nottingham shop in the 1970s, where the studio built stripes by winding yarn around a card by hand so they could see the colours at their most vivid. You will find it as tipping on a polo collar, as a wallet lining, or knitted into a merino sweater.

What is the difference between Paul Smith and PS Paul Smith?

PS Paul Smith is the diffusion line: more casual, lower priced and cut to a regular fit. Mainline Paul Smith is the designer collection, including the tailoring, and it is cut slimmer. The practical consequence is a sizing one. Because PS is regular fit and mainline runs slim, the same number on the label does not give you the same garment. If you are moving between the two, try before you commit.

Can I get a Paul Smith item repaired?

Yes. Paul Smith runs a Repair, Restore, Refresh service covering small snags and tears, shoe resoling, refitting or relining a suit, and specialist cleaning. Repairs on faulty products are complimentary within two years of purchase; anything else is quoted after a consultation. It runs through Paul Smith's own UK shops, excluding concessions, outlets and airports, and there is no Paul Smith shop in Northern Ireland, so speak to us first and we will point you the right way.

Is Paul Smith still made in Nottingham?

The company is still headquartered in Nottingham, where Paul Smith opened a three metre square shop in 1970, which is a genuine rarity for a global fashion house. Manufacturing is a different question and Paul Smith does not publish a country of origin overview. Some leather goods are made in Italy, which the brand states directly. If origin matters for a particular piece, ask us and we will check the label.

Where can I buy Paul Smith in Northern Ireland?

Here, and in our Belfast shop. There is no Paul Smith store in Northern Ireland, so the range at Rio Brazil, Victoria Square, is one of the few places on the island you can see and try the clothes before buying. The full menswear range is online, and orders to the Republic of Ireland dispatch from Belfast without customs charges.
