Frequently Asked Questions
Why do Universal Works trousers have no inside leg measurement?
Because the rise is deeper than most trousers, an inside leg figure would tell you the wrong thing about where the hem actually falls. Universal Works leaves it off the chart for that reason. Go by the fit name instead: Aston is the slimmest, Military Chino is slim to straight, Fatigue and Dutch Pant are loose to oversized, and the Oxford is wide and slightly cropped.
Does Universal Works run true to size?
Yes, sizing is consistent with standard UK sizing. Tops run XS to XXXL and trousers by waist in inches, 28 to 38. What surprises people is not the size but the cut: the silhouettes are relaxed by design, so a Universal Works medium sits wider than a medium from a slim fit brand. That is intended, not a sizing error.
Why is it called the Bakers Jacket?
It is named after David Keyte's father, who was a baker. Keyte remembered the curved sleeves of his dad's work jacket, shaped by years of wear, and added darted sleeves to the pattern to get the same ergonomic bend. The jacket draws on workwear from roughly the 1920s to the 1970s and is remade each season in different fabrics.
Where are Universal Works clothes made?
Universal Works says it produces garments in the right place, both in the UK and overseas, working only with factories it trusts, and it champions skilled, small scale production. It does not publish a full country list. Its Harris Tweed comes from the Kenneth Mackenzie Mill in the Outer Hebrides, which is the one named supplier in the chain. If origin matters for a particular piece, ask us and we will check the label.
Is Universal Works a sustainable brand?
Universal Works makes no formal sustainability claims and holds no certifications, which is unusual and, to be fair to them, honest. What it does have is a Re-Works programme and a growing number of recycled fabrics in the range, including recycled tweed. The stronger argument for the brand on this front is durability: these are clothes cut to be worn for years rather than seasons.
Can I try Universal Works on in Belfast?
Yes. The range is on the rails at Rio Brazil, Victoria Square, Belfast. Universal Works trousers in particular are worth trying rather than guessing, because the rise is higher than most people expect and it changes how the whole trouser sits.
Do you ship Universal Works to the Republic of Ireland?
Yes. We dispatch from Belfast, so orders to the Republic and the rest of Europe go without tariffs, customs checks or paperwork. Standard delivery to the Republic starts from £5.15, takes two to three days, and there is a 10am cut off Monday to Thursday for same day dispatch.

Who Universal Works are
Universal Works was co-founded by David Keyte, who spent decades in British fashion including senior roles at Paul Smith and Maharishi before setting up on his own. The company is based in Nottingham and describes itself as an independent, small company that approaches its work with passion and a sense of humour.
The design brief, in the brand's own words, is to make real, honest clothing based on fit and good design, though never over designed. What that looks like on the rail is workwear shapes in good cloth: a chore jacket you can wear to work and to dinner, a chino with a proper rise, an overshirt that does the job of a light jacket.
The Bakers Jacket
The piece Universal Works is best known for is the Bakers Jacket, named after Keyte's father, who was a baker. Keyte has said he remembered the curved sleeves of his dad's work jacket from years of wear, so he added darted sleeves to get the same ergonomic shape. It draws on workwear from the Fordist era between the 1920s and the 1970s, and the brand now makes new versions every season in different fabrics. It has become the core Universal Works piece for the simple reason that it goes with almost everything.
What we stock
Our range covers tailoring and jackets, trousers and chinos, shirts and overshirts, knitwear and sweatshirts, plus scarves. We do not carry Universal Works footwear.
Fabrics worth knowing about: Harris Tweed, Italian knitted wool fleece, cotton twill, moleskin, corduroy, seersucker, chambray and recycled tweed. The Harris Tweed comes from the Kenneth Mackenzie Mill in the Outer Hebrides.
How Universal Works fits, and the trouser question
Sizing is consistent with standard UK sizing. Tops run XS to XXXL, trousers by waist in inches from 28 to 38. Silhouettes are relaxed across the board.
Trousers need a word of their own, because Universal Works does not publish inside leg measurements and this catches people out. The reason is the rise: their trousers sit higher than most, so an inside leg figure would mislead you about where the hem lands. Use the fit names instead. The Aston is the slimmest, a slim to straight leg. The Military Chino is the contemporary classic, slim to straight. The Fatigue, Troopers Fatigue and Dutch Pant are all loose or oversized, with the Dutch the widest of the lot. The Oxford is wide and slightly cropped.
Buying Universal Works in Belfast and Ireland
Universal Works is one of the harder brands to find on the island of Ireland. Our full range ships across the UK and to the Republic, and the same stock hangs at Rio Brazil in Victoria Square, Belfast. If you want to feel the difference between a Military Chino and a Fatigue Pant before deciding, that is what the shop is for.
