Paige jeans and designer denim, and whether they bag out

Designer denim, led by Paige. The question people actually ask before spending this much is whether the jeans will bag out at the knee, and the answer depends on a number most retailers do not print. The section below explains it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will these jeans bag out at the knee?

Depends on the elastane content, which is the number nobody prints. More elastane means more comfort on day one and more relaxing through the day, typically at the knee and seat. Most of it comes back in the wash, though recovery worsens as the jeans age. As a guide, 1 to 2% elastane gives comfort with good recovery, 3 to 4% is noticeably stretchy and will relax visibly, and above that the fabric behaves more like a knit. Paige publishes no elastane percentage or recovery figure for its Transcend fabric. Ask us and we will read the actual label.

Are Paige jeans true to size?

Paige publishes a womens denim fit guide, and its stated fits are wide leg, straight, flare and bootcut, barrel leg and skinny. We were not able to retrieve their inseam and rise figures directly, so rather than repeat numbers we cannot verify, ring the Belfast shop with the style name and we will measure the actual pair. Paige denim is stretch-based, so a pair that feels snug in the fitting room will usually relax a little within an hour, which is worth factoring in before you size up.

Why do my jeans gap at the back of the waistband?

Because your waist-to-hip difference is larger than the pattern assumes. It is a proportion issue rather than a size issue, which is why the obvious fixes make it worse: going up a size widens the gap, going down makes the hip too tight. The two things that work are a different cut with a higher rise and more shaping through the waist, or a tailor taking in the centre back seam, which is quick and inexpensive. Any decent alterations service will do it for the price of a coffee round.

Do womens jeans shrink in the wash?

Less than people expect, and for most of this collection it is not the right question. Sanforized denim is pre-shrunk and moves no more than about 5%. Unsanforized can move up to 10%. Denim with meaningful elastane does not really shrink at all, it relaxes through wear and recovers in the wash. Almost everything here is sanforized and stretch-blended, so bagging out is the thing to plan for rather than shrinking.

How should I wash stretch jeans?

Cold water, inside out, and as rarely as you can manage. The critical thing is heat: it degrades elastane, so tumble drying stretch denim is the fastest way to destroy the recovery you paid for. Once the elastane has gone, the jeans stay baggy and no wash brings them back. Air dry flat or over a rail. If a pair has relaxed through a day's wear, a cold wash will restore most of the shape.

Is your denim sustainable?

Some of it, and we will be specific rather than general. Skall Studio's denim is 100% organic and GOTS certified cotton, made in Turkey using Jeanologia laundry technology, which cuts water use substantially against conventional finishing. That is a documented position with a certification behind it. For the other brands on this page we are not going to make claims we cannot stand up, so if sustainability is driving your purchase, Skall Studio is the one with the paperwork.

Where can I buy Paige jeans in Ireland?

Here, and in the Belfast shop at UG40, 1 Victoria Square, BT1 4QG, where we trade as Rio Brazil. We ship across Ireland and the UK. Paige is the premium denim in this collection and the range covers wide leg, straight, flare and bootcut, barrel leg and skinny. If you want a specific style or wash, ring ahead, because stock moves between the shop and online.
