Men's trousers, with Italian sizing actually converted

Chinos, cords, tailored trousers and technical, from NN07, Oliver Spencer, Briglia and more. Several of these brands size in Italian numbers rather than UK inches, and the published conversion tables disagree above IT 50, so the section below sets out which to trust.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does rise mean and which one do I want?

Rise is the distance from the top of the waistband to the crotch seam, measured separately at the front and the back. High rise sits on the natural waist between your ribs and hip bones. Mid rise sits at or just above the narrowest part of the hip bone. Low rise sits below it. As a rough guide, mid-rise dress trousers run around 30cm front rise, chinos around 28cm and high rise 33 to 35cm, though no published standard for these bands exists. Rise is worth getting right because it cannot be altered.

How should men's trousers fit?

The waistband should sit without a belt doing the work. You should be able to pinch about an inch either side at the seat. There should be no pulling at the crotch when you sit, which is usually a rise problem rather than a waist one. At the hem, a full break puts a clear fold across the shoe, a half break gives a slight dent, and no break leaves the hem just touching. Slimmer and more tapered trousers generally look better with less break.

What is the difference between chinos and trousers?

A chino is a type of trouser, so the real difference is formality and cloth. Chinos are cotton twill, usually flat fronted with slant pockets, and they sit at the casual end. What people usually mean by trousers is a wool or wool-blend cloth, a smarter finish, on-seam pockets, and often a side adjuster rather than belt loops. Both are in this collection and the filter will separate them.

What is a tapered fit?

Tapered means the leg narrows from the knee down. It says nothing about how wide the trouser starts, which is why a trouser can be roomy through the thigh and still tapered. Slim describes the whole leg being cut close. Straight means the width stays roughly constant from knee to hem. So slim and tapered are not the same thing, and a trouser can be both.

What is corduroy wale?

The number of ridges per inch. The full range runs from about 1.5 to 21 wales, and 8 to 12 is the normal band for trousers. A lower number means fewer, chunkier ribs, which reads as more casual and more rustic. A higher number means a finer, flatter cord that sits closer to a smart trouser. Anything above about 14 wale is really shirting or jacketing rather than trousering.
