Womens trousers, with the rise measured rather than described

Wide leg, tailored, linen and cropped trousers from Cefinn, Munthe, Stine Goya and more. High rise means something different on each of these brands because there is no published standard for it, so the section below deals in centimetres instead of adjectives.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does high rise actually mean in centimetres?

There is no published standard, which is the honest answer and the reason the word is close to meaningless across brands. Rise is measured from the top of the waistband to the crotch seam. High rise is described as sitting on the natural waist between the ribs and hip bones, mid rise at or just above the narrowest part of the hip bone, and low rise below it. Those are body positions rather than measurements, so they vary with your proportions. The only numeric anchors published anywhere are menswear figures from one writer's own trousers. Ask us for the front rise of a specific pair and we will measure it.

How do I measure my inside leg?

Take a pair you already own and wear, lay them flat, and measure from the crotch seam straight down the inner leg to the hem. That is the figure to match. It is far more reliable than a length name, because there is no agreed definition of what short, regular or long means in womens trousers and every brand sets its own. Petite ranges generally assume five foot three and under, but that too is a convention rather than a rule.

Do wide leg trousers suit shorter women?

Yes, if the hem is right, and the usual advice misses the point. What matters is not your height but whether the hem nearly touches the floor over the shoe you will actually wear. An unbroken vertical line from waist to floor is what creates length. A wide leg that stops short puts a horizontal line across the leg and cuts it. So the question is whether the trouser can be hemmed correctly for you with those shoes on, which is a tailoring question rather than a height one. Bring the shoes.

Do linen trousers shrink?

It depends whether the fabric was pre-washed, and almost no brand states it. Indicative figures put pre-washed linen at 1 to 3% on the first wash and raw linen at 4 to 10%, though those come from a secondary source rather than a standards body, and the Irish Linen Guild publishes no percentage at all. Wash cool the first time. Do not tumble dry, because it over-dries the fibres and does more damage than the wash. Iron while damp, wrong side first.

Do linen trousers crease badly?

They crease, and then they get better. Linen creases because the fibre has low elasticity, which is the same property that makes it cool to wear. The Irish Linen Guild notes that as linen is laundered and worn over time it softens and the characteristic creasing becomes less evident. So a pair of linen trousers is at its most creased when new and improves from there. Anyone selling you linen that holds a press is selling you a blend.

What size is an Italian 42 in UK womens sizes?

Probably a UK 10, but the charts on this page disagree with each other. Skall Studio puts Italian 40 at a UK 8, which makes 42 a 10. Baum und Pferdgarten puts Italian 42 at a UK 8, a full size apart from that. Ottod'Ame, the actual Italian brand here, publishes no chart we could retrieve and its stockists are inconsistent. So convert from your waist and hip in centimetres rather than from a size label, and if you are between two, ask us to measure the pair.

Do you sell work trousers?

No. This is designer womenswear: tailored, wide leg, linen and cropped trousers from Cefinn, Munthe, Stine Goya, Ottod'Ame and others. We mention it because searching for womens trousers in Ireland pulls in workwear and PPE brands, and if you need site trousers or protective workwear you are in the wrong shop.
